I am very confused! I've read several books that tell you that taking laxatives for constipation while pregnant is probably harmless. But I read in a book the other night that it might be taking nutrients away from the baby.

What's the real story? I've already talked to my doctor, but they told me to look at the pamplets that they gave me! That says you can take Metamucil, Fibercon, etc.....most of the time they don't work.

Help! I'm 12 weeks, but if I'm constipated, I look 6 months! What do I do?????

I constantly drink water. And, like I said before, I DID ask my doctor. I am eating very healthy, too.

Does this help??

Thanks!

Don't worry the laxatives the doctors suggested won't hurt the baby but there are better Natural ways to go. Try prune juice, fiber cereals or just eat a few prunes everyday. I am 38 weeks and that is what I have done through my pregnancy they seem to work much better! Plus you get all the good nutrients too!

I am on my third pregnancy and I found out from experience that if you use whole food vitamins from the health food store then you won't get as constipated. Also the only laxative that has ever worked for me during pregnancy is milk of magnesia. I have used that with all three pregnancies and so far all three are healthy. The whole food vitamins are natural and your body absorbs more of them and you also get a lot more energy. I am not a health nut but I found this really works.

Well number 1 your not getting near enough water.....drink 2 as much as you normally do and then some. Also, take ONLY what is in those pamphlets...and only what a doctor approves. If you use those other ones you very well could be taking nutrients away from your baby

Laxatives aren't really good for anyone, they slide the food right through you so you don't absorb the nutrients you need from it.

Stool softeners are a much better idea and are perfectly safe to use while pregnant.

But first, I'd try eating naturally laxative foods like spinach, bananas, honey, pears, prunes, peaches, grapes, apples, apricots and bran

I never took laxatives while pregnant because my doc said that it wasn't good for me or the baby, they could cause the baby to have a bowel movement in the womb and that is very bad for the baby. I did however have to take stool softners religiously. My dr told me to take Dulcolax, stool softner only, and to take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. It helped immensely.

first ask your doctor if psyllium husk is ok for you to take while your pregnant. i think it is, i took it sometimes when i was preg, but everyone is different and docs are learning new things all the time, so be sure to ask first...if its OK go to swansonvitamins.com and order psyllium husks, take as directed when needed. they are all natural and really work naturally, so its not quite like taking over the counter chemical type laxatives, which i personally do not think is a good idea for pregnant women. good luck...it seems to get easier the farther along you get, it did for me at least.

my baby is 6 1/2 months old and when I first got pregnant I was constipated, my dr told me that taking an over the counter laxitive was fine.

Sounds like your not getting enough water, YES WATER ~ just plain ole every day WATER....
Pre-natal Vitamins contain Iron, but most Dr's. want you to take extra Iron...If that is the case...Try taking the Extra Iron every other day...
Eat more HIGH FIBER fruits & veggis ~ like Apples & Everybodies favorite PRUNES!!! Dried Fruit tends to help things move along!!!

They want you to put more fiber in your diet...fruits and vegetables, bran flakes or shredded wheat...By all means talk to your doc and listen to him...You are going to bathroom for two now so you weigh the situation and call if nothing is working...they may put you under a dietitian

Are you drinking several cups of water a day? Are you getting enough fiber through veggies and fruit?
