As has been stated above, it really depends on what you want to do. Vegas is expensive. It used to be cheap, but it isn't anymore. Hotels, meals, shows, everything costs way more than it should. People aren't just going there to gamble anymore, so they are trying to make money every conceivable way possible.
If you want to gamble, stay downtown. The hotels are a bit cheaper and they have cheaper machines/table games. The shows are better on the strip. Unfortunately, Vegas is all about money. The more you spend, the more fun you will have. Some will argue that you can have a good time without spending a lot of money, and they are right. But, if you have the money to get a $300/night room at the Belagio, you will enjoy it more. It may sound like a lot of money, but if you spend an entire day by the pool instead of gambling, it may end up being a bargain. New York, New York, Stratosphere and Sahara all have roller coasters, which cost a bit to ride, but if you figure the amount of time you spend standing in line (and hence not spending money), it may be a thrifty way to spend a day as well. Also, if drinking is your thing and you do intend to gamble, keep in mind that drinks are free while you are gambling (except for tips).
A budget is good as long as you stick with it. Take a look at a couple of Vegas websites and see what you'd like to do and how much it would cost. Figure out how much gambling money you want and stick with it. I've found that you need at least $200 to have any fun at gambling. Anything less, and the odds are you will lose it too fast to enjoy it. Of course, people get lucky. That's why they call it gambling.

I go all the time. Your spending depends on what you like or plan on doing. Also, how long are you going to be there? Honestly, staying longer than 3 days is too long for me. I've been for as many as 7 days. But I was there for a conference and didn't have to pay for all of my meals and not much time to gamble. Do you gamble? If so, you might want to take a couple of extra hundred dollars (just to be safe). Whatever you do, DON'T get money from the casino's ATM. It's a rip off!! Food can also get expensive. A really nice buffet will run you $25 or more. I usually reserve my cash for gambling, transportation, and some shopping and use my credit cards for meals. For a 3 day trip I take at least $700. It's the worst to be in Las Vegas with no money.
Have fun!

Has anyone not been to Vega on a short vacation. Check the travel adds. Most of the stays are three or four nights, very few are longer than that. I've been there for as short as 36 hours (and came back with 3 grand). How much depends on where you want to stay. Packages for air and hotel for three nights runs from as cheap as $180 on up. If you stay downtown the Golden Nugget is nice. On the Strip it really varies. As far as spending money, depends on what you play and how you play it. Make use of the coupon books available, they can extend your cash and get you some great deals on food. I'd budget at least $100 to $150 a day. If you play slots don't sit on one machine for more than three or four pulls unless it give you a pay back (my personal philosophy). New York New York has a fun roller coaster and check out the rides in the Luxor too. And make sure you go through Cesar's Palace, fantastic!

I've been there for as little as 18 hours and as long as 8 days. I've done it on zero dollars a day and $200 a day. You can eat all three meals for less than $50 a day or as much as $300 a meal. Attractions can be free up to $50 a person admission - most common is $20. As for gambling - take what you can comfortably afford to lose. You might be making a donation to the city in the form of slots, blackjack, or roulette. =)

We took a 2 night vacation there last year. The plane tickets were about $100 each, we rented a car (don't do that! You really don't want to!), the hotel (Terrible's) was OK. It was within walking distance to the Hard Rock Cafe where we probably spent $120. We ate at the buffets in the hotel/casino ($8 a person) and it wasn't terrible haha. For gambling we limited ourselves to $60 a person.
The drinks and tips will get ya though!
