When arriving to SFO Int'l Airport, I need to find the best way to get to my hotel (in downtown)
Taking such a ride by cab should be very expensive, isn't it?
So I'm looking for a ground transportation service, e.g. a shared van.
I read on sftravel.com that there are many operators that provide shared shuttle trips to the hotels, for about $15 per person.

Some of them allow to reserve and pre-pay the trip, is it worth to do it or is it faster to get outside the airport and just wait for the first van to come? (assuming to arrive in San Francisco at 19:30 pm or so)

It's more convenience to reserve a shuttle, but if you don't want to spend a lot of money, I suggest you to take BART from SFO and get on one of the Muni buses in downtown San Francisco. Shuttles are faster but expensive. On the other hand, BART and Muni are cheaper but take longer time to get to your hotel

No need to make a reservation, although the pre-pay is sort of convenient.

Just walk over to the shuttle area; vans come frequently. If you do Super Shuttle, they'll have a person there who'll ask where you're going and will put you with a group. Downtown is a common destination, so you should get a ride right away.

And I think SS just went up to $18, but it's cheaper than a cab, which depending on traffic could run you $35-40. (However, if you have a couple of people, take a cab; the cost would be close to the same for each person, and you'll go directly to your hotel.)

Have a great time in SF!

Add: Lombard is a big street, so there's no way to know where your hotel is. I have a feeling it'll be closer to the Marina rather than downtown.

Lombard street is a long street, so your hotel may or may not be in downtown. Not too worry, Lombard street generally is nice.

I don't think you need to reserve the shuttle. Some hotels actually have their own exclusive shuttles that bring guests to and from the airport, at no charge. The Hilton and the Hyatt, for example, provide this service. Check with your hotel. Also, there are a lot of shuttles that run with high frequency. So, just wait for the next shuttle, and tell the driver where you are going. The driver will either take you, or direct you to the shuttle that you need to take.

Have a good time in the great City by the Bay!

Call the hotel and ask the concierge. There are 8 billion shuttles and vans that go around the baggage claim. $15 doesn't seem too bad, although it's only $27 for the Evans bus to bring me to Napa from SFO. I'm sure if the hotel knows of the cheapest shuttle they'll let you know since you're a paying customer.

I don't know about getting to the dowtown, but I know there are a lot of shuttle buses I've taken to the burbs, and it was convenient and inexpensive. The Marin Airporter is the one I took and it was a coach bus and really cheap and easy. They ran every 30 minutes and there were other shuttles there to other parts of San Fran that might be best for where you want to go. You don't have to book, you just stand and wait. The lady on the lower level near where you exit the terminal can tell you which one to take.
