Air pressure is caused by changes in temperature and moisture in the air. Measurements of air pressure are measurements of the pull of gravity (weight) of the air that is overhead. As temperature of air increases, it expands and covers a larger area with the same mass so it becomes lighter. As moisture is added to the air, the water molecules displace the nitrogen molecules and make the air pressure lower and the weight lighter.

Literally the particles of air! Colder air is more dense so the air pressure increases and vice versa.
