A sitemap is not a function of a search engine, but rather a page that lists the major pages (with URLs) of a website on a single page. Its a navigation map for people who want to quickly review your whole site at a glance to see if they are interested in looking more.

Various development tools like dreamweaver and front page can do this for you but it will still be up to you to include or exclude individual links from the map.

Now - the bots from google, yahoo, and MSN DO index this page, so it is important to have your search bot file properly indexed and placed at root, or all pages in the site will be found.
