This is my last year at school and while I am not naturally gifted I still plan to do the best that I can do. Anyone with any advice out there about study habits or motivation tips etc would be greatly appreciated.

You need to find a method of study that suits you. If that means taking actually taking the plug off the TV, computer or any other distractions until the weekends then that's the way to go. Draw up a timetable of your subjects, spending about an hour on each subject before moving onto another (poring over one subject all night will probably just leave you bored). Give yourself breaks and have one day off a week where you do something nice to look forward to.

If you can afford a tutor in the subjects you need a bit of help with, get one now, but if that's not an option, you can inquire at your school if there are any after-school or lunchtime tuition classes (or even organise one with your teachers and a few other people who would appreciate it). Any problems that you have with a subject, always ask the teacher to go over it so it's clear in your head.

Studying subjects like maths are best done by doing problems. Get a copy of past exam papers to help prepare you and get you into the habit of doing questions in the way they will be set out in your exams.

Lastly, do take the time to enjoy this year as this is, in many ways, your last year of childhood before entering the adulthood world. Work but don't make it a case of work, work, work with no play. All that will happen is you'll either bore yourself or you will go mad and totally want to slack off if you go to university. One way to work and socialise at the same time is to organise a study group with some of your friends and get together once a week to go over your notes and books with a pizza or snacks.

Read as much as possible. The answers to many of life's great mysteries are in books, and even if they're not you can still learn a couple of interesting new words to confuse people.

Good Luck!
