There are 11 players in a field hockey team with no definitive formation as to where people play, depends on the players abilities and the coaches preference on style of play. You don't have to have a goalkeeper either now.

its like football formation, every team will have different set of fullbacks (defense), midfielders (halfback) and forwards(front line), some teams even use a sweeper.
