It is based on a man whose CAPS LOCK key was stuck. Very tragic.

THe movie is loosely based on Ed Gein so is Psycho, Hannibal Lector, and Chaninsaw Massacre. Ed Gein. Look him up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein Here is some of tyhe stuff they found in his house:
Searching the house, authorities found:

severed heads acting as bedposts in the bedroom;
skin used to make lampshades and upholster chair seats;
skulls made into soup bowls;
a human heart (it is disputed where the heart was found; the deputies' reports all claim that the heart was in a saucepan on the stove, with some crime scene photographers claiming it was in a paper bag);
a face mask made out of real facial skin found in a paper bag;
a necklace of human lips;
a waistcoat, called a "mammary vest", made up of a v****** and b**** stitched together;
other items fashioned from the parts of human bodies, including a belt made from n******.

But no there was never a crazy man in Texas who ran around the highway cut people up with a chainsaw. If you try looking up articles from newspapers on the subject you woundnt find any. When the 1st movie was shown they tried to make it seem like a true story for publicty.

anytime you see "inspired" by a true story it means we took a little fact and made up a whole lot of stuff around it. "Based" on a true story means that most facts are true with some fluff.

As for Texas chainsaw, Writer/Director Tobe Hooper admits that the character is very loosely based on Ed Gein (which Psycho is based on as well). This was a crazy farmer who robbed graves and killed two women (1954 and 1957) and hung their naked bodies like they do in the movies. The most interesting part is the guy was in Wisconsin, no where near Texas.

So, true story or not? Certainly there was no real family of cannibalistic chainsaw murderers slaughtering people in Texas, nor any actual series of chainsaw-related killings. Writer/director Tobe Hooper said the inspiration for the film came from his spotting a display of chainsaws while standing in the hardware section of a crowded store:

I was in the Montgomery Ward's out in Capital Plaza. I had been working on this other story for some months — about isolation, the woods, the darkness, and the unknown. It was around holiday season, and I found myself in the Ward's hardware department, and I was still kind of percolating on this idea of isolation and such. And those big crowds have always gotten to me. There were just so many people to go through. And I was just standing there in front of an upright display of chainsaws. And the focus just racked from my eyeball to the people to the saws — and the idea popped. I said, "Ooh, I know how I could get out of this place fast — if I just start one of these things up and make that sound." Of course I didn't. That was just a fantasy\

In other words, IT IS FALSE. They say based on real facts just to sucker you in and people believe in it. I watched it when it came out and REALLY believed that it was based on a real life story and I am from Texas too. lol

It's lightly based on the killer Ed Gein. Although most of the movie is actually fiction.So is "Silence of the lambs". (Buffalo Bill) And "Psycho" The real Ed Gein did wear a human's scalp and face. The real Ed Gein did this however, to help quell his desire to be a woman, not because of a skin disease as with Leatherface in the film. Also Ed Gein wore a vest of skin complete with breasts and female genitalia strapped above his own.
He did not use a chainsaw tho. His victims were shot. He was also a grave robber.

You're too young to see it. It's rated R. At any rate, you should be in bed at 11. Okay, I'm just giving you a hard time. The movie is scary because they don't do anything stupid; they would do everything a logical person would do, and they still can't escape - that's what makes it so scary. And it is about a man who murders people with a chain saw. It's messed up.

The character depicted in this movie (Leatherface) never existed. The movie was inspired by the story of Ed Gein. The footage shown in the beginning of the movie is also fictional.

There actually was a Texas chain saw massacre. I can't remember the year, but (like *Sarah* said) they do show real clips from the real story at the beginning of the movie. There was really a guy that was that messed up and I think he killed some of his family and that's how it all started. But it really did happen.

The serial killer, Ed Gein. The movie "Psycho" was also inspired by him. Neither was a direct biography of his life, just certain aspects were inspired by him and the things he did. Butchering people, wearing skin, keeping his deceased mother in the house, etc, etc.
