To answer someone else's comment. Once on this Island was written by Broadway vets, Ahrens and Flaherty, who wrote Ragtime and Seussical. So it's a very New York musical, alright, and it takes place "on an island where the rivers run deep" and is called "The Jewel of the Antilles".

As for musical from non-English speaking countries:

In Germany, there are Elisabeth and Tanz der Vampires (which was brought to Broadway as dance of the Vampires starring Michael Crawford. The show was a gigantic flop as it was re-written to be very campy vs. the gothic thriller that it was in Germany).

Yes, Les Miserables was originally from France. Notre Dame de Paris is also French and written by Richard Cocciante and Luc Plamondon.

In Portugal, there is also Scents of Light, which is written in English and is about the Holocaust.

Korea also has it's dance and music specttacular, The Last Empress, as well, which toured North America.

For English speaking, don't forget that The Boy from Oz is an Australian musical. The Drowsy Chaperone and Evil Dead: the Musical are also Canadian. So are The House of Martin Guerre, Larry's Party and Anne of Green Gables.

There are many shows that may or may not fit the bill of a musical as we typically know it in North America and England, but have elements of music, dance and theatricality. I'm sure that there are many more that we just can't name.

Regarding the subsequent entry, The Secret Garden does take place in India in the opening sequence, but then shifts to England for the rest of the show. It was written in the US for Broadway by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon. Yes, there is one song in it that is sung in an Indian language (in Hindi, Urdu, I'm not sure), but the Indian part of the show is very brief. The rest of the show is sung entirely in English.

The Secret Garden is the story of an English girl who lives in the colony of India during the Victorian century. Her parents die of cholera and she is sent to live with her uncle in England. It is a beautiful story with gorgeous, haunting music. It has Indian music as well as English, and it takes place in both countries. There is also a song sung completely in Indian. If you'd like a translation of the Indian-sung song, search "A'o Jadu Ke Mausam" on google; these are some of the lyrics and it will bring you to a lyric site.

"Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge", this is a musical from India. It is about a young man and girl in London who fall in love but she is brought back home to get married in an arrangement made by her family. The young man follows her and proceeds to infiltrate the wedding ceremonies to win her back the rest is up to you to watch but I found the songs in it to be very good and the acting was a kind of tongue in cheek routine. Very fun movie
for a musical.

With Andrew Lloyd Weber being English...that would qualify any play that he has written as "from another country."

Also, most opera comes from outside of the US: The Magic Flute, Wedding of Figaro...all Mozart operas that come "from another country."
