Gargoyles are meant to look like demons to keep demons away.
The belief was that it would keep demons away, if one came around it would see the gargoyle and think that there was already a demon there and move on to find a place where no other demons were.

Some believe that gargoyles could have been up to ward off evil spirits and protect the valuables within the church, this being a continuation from the Greek tradition. The idea was that demons were either frightened away or assumed that other evil creatures were already there and would avoid attacking the building. That could explain why gargoyles are rarely pretty, but horrible, grotesque in their appearance. They would have been a "sort of sacred scarecrow to frighten the devil away"

Well the superstition of Midieval times said that they were dark spirits who came back to ward off other dark spirits. Dark spirits are probably scary looking, and even after the superstition faded the tradition of making them scary looking lived on.

I think the intention was to protect the occupants of a property and the gargoles were to scare off any undesirables.

People in the old days were more superstitious about such things.

I think that they are just misunderstood. And if I had to set around for centuries with a church spire up my butt I might look a little upset too.
