i think it would be best to keep them in seperate cages. hamsters aren't socicable animals. i've heard that dwarf hamsters are, but syrians aren't.

Syrian hamsters are solitary animals. If kept together, they will fight. And most of the time, its a fight to the death. Syrians will also do that to their own species. They will only get together to mate, and after that, the female syrian will usually chase the male one away.

Dwarf hamsters on the other hand are social animals. They do well being kept in a group. However, a single dwarf hamster also do quite well in captivity (my own experience).

So, the answer is - you have to keep them seperately.

They're solitary animals and shouldn't even be kept w/their own kind. You see groups of either at pet shops, but they're young and often littermates....so get by with it for a while. I wouldn't risk it, use a seperate cage.
