What different 'youth tribes' are there today in the UK, what categorises someone in that tribe and who best exemplifies each tribe? EG I know that there are goths - maybe exemplified by Marilyn Manson - but what other 'tribes' are there out there? Please help as I am trying to put together a training event for youth workers and wish to include information on relevant youth culture.
Thanks in advance

I am not trying to get 'down wqith the kids' actually! I want people on the day to think about youth culture a s a real and living, important thing. Don't want to miss anyone out - hence this question. (I expected better of someone calling himself 'Leopold Bloom'. Get off your high horse!) It is a valid question. Trying to avoid the 'all kids are the same' approach which is inclusive and accepting

There are probably enough groups to write a novel on but there are several main ones
Chavs- these people often wear fake designer clothes, big gold chains and typically the children are called Chardonnay or Jade (teachers admit they hate seeing these names on registers). They typically enjoy rap music and reading about celebrities in magazines like Heat. Many do not do well at school and leave with few qualifications. Chavs are mostly teenagers and it is not uncommon to find a 15 year old with a small baby of their own. A good example is the Vicky Pollard image from Little Britain.
Goths- you've mentioned this one but the goth culture mainly centres around heavy metal music, black or dark clothes and heavy dark make up. They typically are interested in th occult as well, particularly vampirism and demons (you'll find many heavy metal bands mention these). There is a fashion as well for chains and ornate jewellery.
Trendies- these are usually girls, and usually denote people who take a massive interest in fashion and designer labels, often reading Vogue and other high end magazines. They tend to be quite creative and often take an interest in art, drawing and music as well as fashion. These girls are also popularity driven- they see it as a duty to be popular with plenty of friends and a busy social life. These tend to be older teenagers of around 13 upwards.
Emos- this is a fairly new tribe, which is mostly music driven. Typically emo people seek to emulate so-called emo music groups, and so many have sweeping hair with fringes that often cover the face, drainpipe jeans and make-up, unusually boys and girls wearing eyeliner, lipstick and blusher. Emo music includes bands like Panic At The Disco and My Chemical Romance. One of the major issues in this group is that some of their music encourages self-harm, particularly wrist-cutting. This is something that has been denied by the bands and the fans, but the typical image of emos is very depressed. Again this tends to be older teenagers and college age people.
Hope this helps!

There are many different types of 'youth tribe' in the UK and depends on where you are they have different names. Where I live there are: Scene Kids, Chavs and Sloanes. However, elsewhere you will hear about Emo, Townies and Preps. I daresay there are many more.

There are many differant tribes in youth today, but I think it's important to remember that not all fit into any group or tribe and are completely alienated in society.
