I heard some people on TV saying they were certain that humans are the only life that exists in the universe. How could the be so certain unless they're aliens?

Its quite easy there has never been concrete evidence that there is another life form.

to say something definitely does not exist because we haven't seen it or found it is a logical fallacy.

you can't prove the non-existsence of something by lack of evidence. in fact, it would be nearly impossible to prove aliens don't exist, while it would be amazingly simply to prove that they DO exist.

however, i don't agree with the idea that other life forms are necessarily more advanced. i think it would be a great irony if it turned out we were the first aliens to invade another lifeform's planet, only to find we're the most advanced beings in the universe.

Gee, that's odd, not to mention impossible.

We're not the only form of life here on the planet Earth -- there are millions of other species. We're not the only intelligent species here on Earth, either.

So I wonder what those folks on TV mean by "the only form of life in the universe"?

Am with you all the way. I really don't think that we are alone. But I also think that the media is being manipulated by the politics. So in order to keeps us busy, they would say anything. It's common nature for the human race to feel superior and therefore say that we are the only alive planet. But if you really give a thought to this issue, what do you think the bible is talking about when they refer to angels?

True. But people also "know" there is a god. Some people don't need logic in their belief.
The only thing we should be able to say is that we don't have verifiable evidence of other life in the universe. But you can't equate "no evidence for x" to "evidence for no X."

I keep it with Sir Charles Popper:
It is true (e.g. there IS intelligent life out there) until someone prooves it wrong. Positive rationalism!

On the other hand: statistically it is impossible that there is no intelligent life apart from us. (What was it that Churchill said? Not the sports thing, the other...?)

Finally: Is there intelligent life in our solar system?
Eric Idle said he hopes there is intelligent lefe out there because there is b u gg e r down here!

Let them be...Carl Sagan always believed that it was not possible that in such a vast universe we were the only living things around...if that was true we were able to demostrate the existence of God...

People are narrow minded. How could we be the only ones? No one has any idea how extremely large the universe is.

they mean that they have found no evidence as yet. they can and will never be sure unless they find extra terrestrial life as the universe is so large that our minds can't comprehend it.
