It's a hangover from typewriters. Can get annoying alright when you're trying to hit shift and hit caps lock by mistake.
USEFUL IF YOU WANT TO SHOUT, THOUGH!

Useful. Not badly located as a touch-typist will confirm. Think of trying to type a full heading in capital letters and trying to hold the caps lock button as well. Take you twice as long.

Caps lock is very useful. Sometimes you need to have things all in capitol letters. I suppose it could be put in a better place though. Thank heavens it is not like the old days were you had to white out everything you did wrong. Very easy to hit the shift when you want caps lock and vice versa.

I have determined that the placement and purpose of the Caps Lock button is just as normal as the placement of any other key...you just have to learn to use it properly.

Would it be helpful to disable the key in Windows? I've included a link that should help.
