We suddenly got a leak in our roof and water dripped all over the mattress for hours and it was soaked through. It's dry now, but I've always heard a mattress is ruined after it gets wet b/c it will smell and get moldy. Is that true?

If it is just water, and you dried it as fast as possible before it could mold there should not be a problem at all. It would be no different then washing and air drying your clothes. If you are concerned you could give it a coat of Lysol to kill any surface germs and let it dry. If there is still any possibility it is wet inside then it could be a concern for mold.

The problem comes with the mattress itself. While it feels dry to the touch, it may still be wet inside. It will eventually dry, but it will take some time. The dampness will harbor and promote mold growth as well as a haven for dust mites and other biological species. The real question is if you can live with the fact that there may be something growing inside your mattress that can be harmful to your health. Good luck.

Yes, and this can be very bad for your health. It does not take mold very long to grow, less than 24 hours in the right condition.
