They're like anyone. Good plots, well paced action, well resolved solutions to problems. Now that's where the similarities end. Children like a variety of other thing and that depends on the age of the child. The best thing you could do is to ask around bookstores and explain why you're interested. Contact editors and publishers of children's books and ask them what children seem to like. If you know any teachers ask them to poll their students. Go to schools and talk to administrators if you can poll some of the classes, or if you can talk to the librarian they would know which books are the most read/popular among various age groups. Remember children usually aren't interested in adult topics(finance, politics, etc.)so use a little common sense, too. Heck, most adults don't read books on finance and politics.

Related your topic to something that is familiar to them.
For young children, you are looking at picture books. It means 32 pages- you need to tell a good story in few words.
Pick up, "From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books," by Kathleen T. Horning.

animals... like you can have a dog trying to find out his name so he travels everywhere to find his name, and then he meets many other dogs... kids like ryming.. and animals.. or you can make a story based on a story, like natalia was saying.. the freaky cinderella one.. or like the real stroy of the 3 little things... ect ect
