I know the Dominican Republic's currency is in Pesos, is it better to exchange in Canada for DR Pesos, as I know hotels usually charge more? What is considered a reasonable tip, for dinner, as we are going to an all inclusive resort? If one gives a gift such as toys, for children, is this considered out of place, or impolite to do? Thank you

I found from experience that in the D.R American money has a better rate then Canadian. So what I do is buy American here and exchange it for local currency there. I aslo make sure that I have plenty of single dollar bills for tips, Dominican like US currency. As for the toys, I bought local toys Christmas of 2005 and distributed them to farm children and this was well received. I definately got many happy faces.

As far as changing currency. your best bet would be to bring it here and exchange it. However, do not change it at the Hotel or at a bank. Your best bet at the Casas de Cambios that are located pretty much everywhere. All you have to do is ask a local. You will get a higher rate of return. In Canada, as well as in the US, you will get a much lower rate.

Tips are a funny thing here in the Dominican Republic. They really are not "required" as they are in our native countries. giving anything in this country is appreciated...as long as it is above 20 pesos. If you are eating at a higher-end restaurant, then by all means, tip.

You will find a huge difference in customer service here. Basically it does not exist in most circles. Therefore, I usually only save my tiping to those who put forth a little more effort. You'll know what I mean when I get here.

At the all-inclusive hotels, don't bother tiping in the buffet! Try it when you order a drink and you will find that you have made a server very happy and he or she will keep coming back for more. Keep this in mind....the average worker is not making much - only about 5,000 - 10,000 pesos per month. If you do tip those who work for it, they will really appreciate it.

Bringing toys? It's not really impolite to do so, but be prepared for the mob scene that you will create. Children talk! Your best bet would be to give toys to a local orphanage, or better yet, drop off a donation.

My only advice, from one who lives here is this: Be careful. This is an underdeveloped country, and people have little qualms about taking advantage of those who have more - without ANY regrets.

Take your money to an exchange house, Casa de Cambio, they will pay more for it. tips in all inclusive hotels are not common at the restaurants, now you will tip the bell boy when he takes your bags to the room, you can tip the maid, and also waiters that assist you, if you want you can save a better only tip for waiters at the end of your trip.
