I am making a dress and in one step it says "finish outer edge of skirt back self facing." In the next step, it says "turn self facings to inside along fold lines". What do they mean when it says "self facing"

It means they allowed extra material so you can turn it over onto itself to make a double layer..I bet it's the waistband!

Step one, you do a line of zig zag with a short stitch length (I go #1 length with a #2 zig zag width) so the edge won't fray when you wash the skirt.

Step 2, you fold the material to the inside and now you have a double thickness in that spot.

Kacky is right but if it's a zipper, they may have wanted you to fold back for the zipper.
