My son got a toy for Christmas and it is too little for him. He is not interested in it at all. I feel bad giving it away because it's new and from husbands sister. What should I do?

Hi-
You didn't give alot of information, but a few things come to mind that I'd like to pass along to you -
First, keep in mind that quite often we as parents buy toys for our kids and this same thing happens- This year "santa" spent $500. on our kid, and he only wants to play with the empty boxes-he gets into one of them and sits there just as happy as ever- Its now January 8th, and we still have a big box sitting in our living room - its his favorite "thing", and he would be devastated if we threw it out.
You didn't say how old your son is - if he's a small child, a toddler or pre-schooler, just put the toy with his other toys- if your sister in law comes over alot, display it where she would notice it if she went into the playroom. If she asks if he likes it, just smile and tell her: "oh, I'm sure he does - isn't it funny how we spend so much time picking out just the right thing, and then they seem to go for the empty boxes!!- kids are so funny, aren't they?" - this will get the conversation off the gift, and move it onto a general, light-hearted discussion of the way kids are -
If your sister in law lives a thousand miles away, yes, you could give it to the good will or something; but, if she is likely to visit you in the next year, don't get rid of it!!!!! Like I said, just sit it with the other toys he plays with, and don't give it a second thought.
Any person, but esspecially a woman, knows that you can pay a zillion bucks on the finest toy, and still have no control over whether the child will be drawn to it. Make a cup of tea, and don't worry about this anymore - You are a nice person, who cares about familly and their feelings - so I'll bet you have a whole mental list of stuff you want to give your attention to - so, get this one and put a "check" next to it, and call it "resolved"!!
God bless you.

Why should you feel bad giving it away? Maybe a poor child would like a new toy. Or, some families keep younger toys in case a small child visits.

If it hasn't been opened, return it back to the store it was purchased from. If you dont have the reciept, you will get store credit but then you can find a toy that he is interested in. If it has been opened, donate it to children who don't have any toys. There are programs out there that offer this kind of thing.

1-thing about kids is that they can get 10 toys at 1-time & somehow only get attached & play with 1. This works out good for you in this situation because you could take that toy, put it in the back of the toy box/closet & nobody will know what's going on. If questions are asked you just simply say, you know, he's got his favorite toy that he plays with & I just put the others away until he's ready to play with them.

Donate it to a child who doesn't have any toys. There are several such programs. Your brother's sister will not even know. Anyway, kids outgrow their toys all the time.

It could be given to your pediatricians office play area where children of all ages spend time or to a pediatric unit in a hospital to be used by hospitalized children. There are many places that need childrens toys for children of all ages.

I would tell your sister-in-law that the toy was too little for him, and ask her where she bought the gift. If you can exchange it, do so for something more his age. If you can't return it, donate it, but tell her what you're doing with the gift so she won't get mad.

I would donate it to someone less fortunate, your sister inlaw would never know, or you could let her know in case she comes around or ask your son how he likes the toy.

Don't feel bad for giving it away. Kids outgrow toys all the time...give it to a church, someone will enjoy it!

You plan on having more kids?

If you don't want to give it away, put it in the closet, have your son thank her for the gift, and never think about it again.
