Well, it depends on the horse. A big strong horse with a lot of bone can easily carry this weight and more beside. I'm approximately 11 stone which is about 150 lbs and my horse is easily capable of carrying my weight. There is a calculus for determining a humane weight. Consider that my friends horse can jump over 5' with a 150 lb person, not exactly struggling under the weight. Also consider that horses have a unique anatomy of their backbone which makes it suitable for carrying weight. Recently, I rode a large horse that galloped tirelessly up a hill, with such apparent ease that I am sure my weight was no more significant to him than one of those water packs you can where on your back would be to me.
Furthermore, horses are affectionate and expressive creatures and quite capable of showing pleasure or dissatisfaction and I can assure you that the horse, if he is treated compassionately and with respect, looks forward to the ride.

I think you are overreacting. Carrying a six year old on your back is nothing at all like a horse carrying a 150lb person. The average American weighs in at above 150 lbs and few horses wuld be unable to buck that weight off, if they were determined to.

I think your fiance is right. you just crapped all over my day! I am a horse "lover ", "owner", "trainer" and have rescued many, and now yer sayin' I am too fat to ride my "babies"? Try feeding and loving horses for 40 years, then tell a Cowboy or Cowgirl it's crule to ride a horse if yer over 150lbs.
I actually have a horse, that will not move a mussle if the rider isn't at least 150 lbs., she was trained to stand when a child is on her back. When I get on @ 190lbs, she enjoys her ride and loves to show how good she is.

It's a horse. They have been carrying people over 150lbs for centuries, I am sure that they have evolved enough to handle it. When one finally speaks up I will listen but until then I say ride on!!! What's next? No leather shoes because the animal used to be alive and walking in the skin might somehow offend some spirit so no more of that!
Animals are here to serve people, either for working, playing or eating.

Your question is ridiculous.
Horses are working animals and are capable of carrying much more than 150lbs.
Comparing a horse with a rider to a person carrying a 6 year old child piggyback is like comparing apples to oranges. The ratios are not even in the same hemisphere.
You are an over-reactor.....

If Dan Blocker could ride a horse, and if a horse can carry two adults when necessary, then you have no call to pick on people who ride good, healthy, sturdy horses just because they weigh more than average. Remeber there are some horse breeds that were specifically bred to carry a knight in full armor.

A horse can support a lot more weight than 150lbs without straining itself.
At 150 a horse does not even know there is someone up there.
Also humans cage, beat and brand horses, and those are the healthy ones, the sick ones we chop up and turn into glue. My point is, we do a lot worst than ride them.

I think your critical thinking skills are woefully lacking.
A horse is incredibly strong and its body is not built in any way like ours. Thus a horse is capable of maintaining the weight of 150lb person, and a human cannot because we're built differently.
That your sympathy is extended to a horse, while you call us "savages" tells me what a piece of work you are.

Horses do have a mind of their own, just like any animal. Training controls their behavior, but if a horse really doesn't like someone on their back, believe me, that someone is going to be on the ground soon.

why the 150 pounds? Most people do weigh more than that, men anyway, and horses are beasts of burden, big animals. they can handle it with no harm. Im sure if you asked them they wouldnt really want anyone riding on them, even a six year old child.
