I am a libertarian, I minored in History as an undergrad.
I hated the fact that all, not most, but all, of my professors where biased liberals; and I felt that they mostly taught a one-sided view of history. Without reading non-sanctioned supplementary material, one could easily fall into the trap of believing only the facts presented by the esteemed professors.
So, I don't think that liberals "slept" through history class, well may be some of the women, pun intended. They just choose to examine only facts that support their viewpoints.
For everyone who claims to have 165 or 170 IQs. Don't forget Sharon Stone supposedly has an IQ of 154, and one of the most brilliant Physicists of the 20th Century, Richard Feynman, had an IQ of 125.
I seriously doubt Sharon Stone is more intelligent than Feynman. I don't think Sharon Stone would have much luck developing a unified field theory.
By the way, I wonder how many of the super geniuses even know who Richard Feynman was.
Anyway, I would love to debate Joe Prosnick on any historical topic.

I actually have a degree in US history. There were many different political views, especially in the higher level classes. I had some good teachers, some biased and some balanced. Some of the comments I've seen on here would lead me to disagree with you about the fact that "republicans" paid more attention in class than liberals. Especially comments about checks and balances in the federal government.

I would more likely say: There are a lot of liberals and conservatives here who didn't pay attention in class.

Attitude: I am not a person who goes with the status quo just because. I voice my opinion and don’t cave to party pressure. I believe on moving ahead not back you staying the course. I believe in the constitution. Believe you should question government. They are not always right and above board. They work for us not the other way around God: I believe in Separation of Church and state and religious freedom Love of Country: I love my country and my freedom. U.S. Flag: I love our nation's flag and what it represents - it is wrong to desecrate it. That’s why it should be a law not to do that. Until there is, there’s nothing that anyone can do about it. So if you don't like it change it. Abortion: It’s between the Woman and her God and no one else Marriage: I don’t care. Just don’t bother me Affirmative Action: Enough is enough. I do agree Best person for the Job Period Military: Coming from a Military family I to respect our armed forces and the fact that they are willing to give there life for mine. My Father, Brother and daughter are vets, and son in law is going to Iraq Business: I don't think that Business should get more tax breaks then your average American does Taxation: Again I don’t feel that the wealthy should be given more tax breaks the your average middle class Healthcare: Everyone in this country should have the right to medical care. Are we a third world nation. Do you realize how much more it cost to care for people who have not got preventative care and your trying to undo years of neglect because they can’t afford care? It’s better and cheaper to prevent then try and fix Energy: I think our government could be doing more for green sources for energy; plenty of other nations are way ahead of us on that front. Instead of breaks and incentives to the oil companies, why not incentives for people to convert there homes to solar power? Environment: I think that it should be a balance you cannot continually take and never give back; there won’t be anything for the future. Personal Responsibility: I believe in taking personal responsibility for my actions, and not pointing the finger at someone else to take the blame. Like the Entire Government is doing these days

Many of them are quite intelligent.
You can tell those who are intelligent apart from the ones who haven't studied history easily:
1. They're the ones who question the Holocaust.
2. They're the ones who compare President Bush to Hitler.
3. They're also the ones who seem to think that President Bush is a war criminal, because civilians have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. They forget how many civilians were killed as a result of Vietnam, Korea, WWII, WWI, Civil War...
4. They jump on Republicans because of Mark Foley, but forget about Franks, and Studds.
5. They think Carter was a good president.
So, anyway, I don't COMPLETELY agree with the premise of your question, simply because I don't believe in stereotyping an entire group like that. But I see your point.

Naturally, I assume most liberals are airheads who like to be a part of the crowd. Devoid of their own original thought, they repeat the mantra that conservatives can't think for themselves while they are themselves unable to support their positions with anything but assertions and quotes from the assertions of other liberals.
But honestly if you consider the indoctrination we get at the hands of most school teachers, it's a wonder any of us are conservative. I was a very lone conservative in high school.
In sum, I believe they took the history classes but that they were taught by people who presented the liberal POV.
Pip - there are high IQs on both sides of the lib/con aisle. You'll come around! ;-) Under the rhetoric, most issues come down to how to solve an issue. We all want everyone to be wealthier. The libs want to seize money from the wealthy under the threat of imprisonment and give it to the poor in the form of welfare or even minimum wage increases. The cons, contrary to lib attacks, also want people to get wealthier but think it's best to allow businesses to grow and the free market to grow under the belief that a rising tide raises all ships. Neither position is inherently evil, but the liberal position is a short term one at the expense of long term prosperity.
This is, I believe, the nature of the original question. Seeing that socialism has worked exactly nowhere for very long, how can intelligent people promote socialism?

Actually, if YOU studied American history you would find that this country was founded by liberals, expanded because of liberals, grew as a mighty economic force because of liberals, and became the modern country YOU can live and work in safely and comfortably because of Liberals, and did so much so well that YOU are too ignorant of history to have a clue as to what we have done.
Conservatives big achievement is maintaing the death penalty.
Oh, and most historians and history professors are liberals. They must have stayed awake.
Chew on this: The American Historical Society voted your boy George as the WORST President in US history.
Now, go run off to ypur remedial history class.
