Just had the results of my triple test and i have a one in 22 chance of having a downs baby. Next step is an amnio, anyone else had odds like this and then had the amnio and the baby was fine?

mery you stated the next step is an amnio?.....the next step should be a level2 or high intensity ultra-sound. where the dr measures the fungal fold on the baby's neck as well as measuring the long bones such as the femur (DS kids generally have shorter long bones) as well as looking for congenital heart defects and intestinal defects which are common in kids with down syndrome.
Please don't worry the triple screen is not very accurate, if you are off on your conception date it will effect the outcome as well as other factors. ask you dr. for the ultra-sound. if they do find something like a heart defect such as av-canal they will ask you if you want to do an amnio.
I went through that scare twice.....through the ultra-sound they found that my 2nd son was just fine. my 3rd son they discovered he had a congenital heart defect called av-canal and it is common in kids with DS....so to better prepare myself I had the amnio done. it came back positive for down syndrome. 4 months later I gave birth to a beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed little boy; who is the joy of my life and he just so happens to have DS. it is a tough road to take, but it is also one of the most rewarding. I know you are probably scared and worried, but please try and not to be....wait and see what the ultra-sound tells you. and most importantly....congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby!

Some people have suggested a nuchal scan, but that has to be done at around 12-13 weeks and the blood tests are usually much later than that.
I know people who have got such a result, had an amnio and then said that the amnio was the most stressful thing they ever did.
Best of luck with everything.

Friend had similar odds and had amnio and baby was fine. I'm sure you know that amnio has its own risks, and can cause you to miscarry. Think about what you would want to do if baby was Downs. If you wouldnt abort whatever, then no point if having amnio and possibly risking a miscarriage on healthy non-Downs foetus. I hope all goes well for you.

Hi, sorry you are worrying, this happened to my friend too, her son was fine. the thing is with these tests is they don't just go on what's in your blood, they work out a risk for your age, family history etc.I,m 14 wks pregnant with my second and know my test will prob come back high too as i'm 37 and have a nephew with downs syndrome. how many wks are you? it might be worth going for one of those 4D scans to see what it can pick up rather than risk a amnio? hope all is well and try not to worry.

Friend of mine had the same thing happen to her. Initial screening came back high chance of baby having down's syndrome. Had the amnio and everything was fine. she had a healthy beautiful baby boy.

Find a good genetic counselor right away. Have the amnio done. Be patient and try not to worry too much. Chances are it;s just wonky test results. I'm not going to tell you my horror story, just know that sometimes the tests are not always accurate.

My wife had two have a amnio twice.Once each for both our children(both OK).For a medical reason she has, we were told not to have children. Our odds were 1 in 10 so they are not always right. Good luck.

i hate that test i refuse to take it. when i was pregnant with my first son they said i had a one in 20 or something chance of having a baby that was downs. i refused to take the amnio test. i did not want anything stuck in my belly. i just could not do it. not to say that you should'nt do it i just choose not to. my son was born just fine . your child will be fine too. take the extra test if you want to be sure. good luck.

There is a another type of scan you could try, where they look for the nose bone (depends how many weeks you are). Check out the links

I've had 3 girlfriends have the same results and none of those babies had one thing wrong with them. Don't let yourself worry to much about it. Good luck.
