Oxygen when it is first produced is in the form of atoms but because of its structure very quickly joins up with another oxygen atom to form an oxygen molecule O2.
Others that do the same include H2, N2.F2 (NOT FL2!!!)
He, Ne etc don't.

Oxygen is O2!
Oxygen is a diatomic element. This means that there are 2 atoms for every oxygen molecule.

Hi...
If O is Oxygen... And what is O2? Nice question.
Actually, the answer is inside the "Periodic Table of Elements".
Oxygen is a chemical element with the chemical symbol O and atomic number 8. On Earth, it is usually covalently or ionically bonded to other elements.
O2 means unbound oxygen (also called molecular oxygen, or dioxygen, a diatomic molecule)

Both 0 and 02 are oxygen.
02 is the naturally occuring oxygen that we all need to breathe. It is made up of 2 O atoms and it is how it is found in its common state eg room temp, normal pressure.
0 is an oxygen atom (note:singular). This is not naturally occuring but can be manipulated into this state through reactions and temp/pressure control.
O2 is found in this bimolecular state because that is how oxygen feels "comfortable" existing at normal conditions. To get more complicated with a further insight into this reasoning it all goes into molecular orbitals and shells.

Oxygen O is the atom. It has 6 electrons on its outer shell> This shell must have 8 electrons to be complete. So 2 atoms of oxygen share two electrons to make the molecule O2 which is stable.

O is just the symbol for oxygen and O2 is the formular symbol for Oxygen because oxygen is diatomic so it 'goes around in twos'

It's O2 because oxygen cannot exist with only one atom.

At standard temperature and pressure, oxygen exists as a diatomic molecule with the formula O2, in which the two oxygen atoms are doubly bonded to each other. In its most stable form, oxygen exists as a diradical (triplet oxygen) with two unpaired electrons in molecular orbitals of the O2 molecule.
