My bf got a puppy on Friday. I found out about it when I got home late at night. He said he wanted to surprise me, that's why he didn't tell me about it. I repeatedly told him in the past that I didn't want a puppy because we live in a small one bedroom apartment, and I didn't want to spend the money or time on it. I also told him that we ( actually he, since I won't have any part in taking care of it) cannot afford vet bills if the dog were to get sick. He understood, and he wants to get rid of it for those reasons, but at the same time he still wants to keep it. I want it out, he's pooping everywhere, and I LOATHE the smell of dog. It's a shame, the dog is cute as hell, but we just don't really have the resources or the room for it. I also work in a restaurant and don't want to have dog hair (it's a husky/chow mix) or dog smell on my clothes when I go to work.
Anyway, would it be a great surprise if I took the puppy to the SPCA or something like that while he was at work?

If we lived in a house, or larger apartment, it probably wouldn't be a problem.

Ginger, but I told him from the beginning that it wasn't a good idea, and we can't properly take care of it.

Beech, this is probably going to offend you, and others, but I did not grow up in a household with dogs indoors, and I can't compare a puppy to a human baby. Sorry.

I understand you and you're right. Your boyfriend bought the puppy for himself not you.
It will break his heart if you take the puppy to the ASPCA without telling him. I suggest that you discuss this with him first and let him know where you stand. If he doesn't give you the courtesy than by all means do what you have to do

do not take this dog to the SPCA while he is at work. do it with him or let him do it on his own. but does it HAVE to go that way? he was wrong, yeah...but a man with out a dog, is like a woman with out a purse. its just not meant to be that way. vet bills are are usually negligible for the 1st few years or so. the dog can quickly and easily be trained with the right knowledge(NO HITTING!!). and indoor dogs usually don't smell, particularly with some regular grooming. it would be a learning experience that would be like having a child. it could be your "family". it would be a good test. and a wonderful and loving companion. at the very least, make him promise to train, and care for the dog properly, and help him! its your "child" too! what if you accidentally got pregnant against his wishes, and he didn't want it, but you did? would you get rid of it? would you resent him if he made you? think hard on this. i know its only a dog, but it could change your life and your relationship for good or bad, depending on what you decide, and how you live with the decision. but, please, if you keep the dog, then commit to it with him! i'd like to know how it turns out.

No!! The "surprise" was supposed to be a positive thing. A man that brings home a puppy, is telling you he is in this for the long haul, is consciously/ unconsciously proclaiming commitment to you and the relationship. Getting rid of the dog, should be on him, and his decision on how/where the dog is placed. Be firm though, and don't relent on getting rid of it, he'll fix this, and your relationship won't suffer because you don't keep it. He brought it in, he should take it out.

Your boyfriend is probably attached to the dog now and that would not be a good surprise, if someone did that to me I would be very angry at them for giving my dog away.Sounds like a beautiful dog
