That sounds pretty good, here in the US new moms only get 6 weeks paid (normally)....some companys differ, but that's the standard, and dads can get 2 wks. I think it varies state to state and company to company, but that's general.

I'm dreading beginning my maternity leave here in Massachusetts, because I'm allowed 8 weeks UPAID. I have student loans and bills and the financial worry sure is putting a damper on my happy moments. I have relatives in France who have a much better deal. My aunt hasn't been working since having her 6 boys and the goverment aid she receives is much better than the monthly help our Welfare department gives poor, suffering citizens. No wonder so many people end up struggling...

US law requires that under certain circumstances (time w/company, a certain number of hours worked and size of company) a person be allowed up to 12 weeks off to care for a new baby or adopted child. Anything more is up to the company.

I work for the federal government in the US and I get NOTHING. I can take up to a year off unpaid, and I can use my vacation or sick time, but they don't give me anything because I had the baby. It's quite a terrible way to treat mothers, actually.
