In the US if you've been on your job more than a year and are a full time employee and your company has more than I think it's 75 employees, they have to allow you to take 12 weeks off, but they don't have to pay you. Some companies carry short-term disability policies on employees which will allow you to be partially paid for the first 6 weeks (8 if you have a c-section) but someone in your companies HR dept can tell you if that's avalible to you.

If you were my employee and walked to me in my office and asked for maternity leave, I would agree to the extent of you having your job back when you returned (since thats the only thing required by law) and thats if you return in a resonable time period. If I hired you without the guarantee of maternity pay which is TOTALLY different than maternity leave...Most likely, you'll use a combination of short-term disability (STD), sick leave, vacation, personal days, and unpaid family leave during your time away from work.....If you work for a small company you are not guaranteed under the FMLA and you are only guaranteed unpaid leaves....check with your company ... Hope this helps

You can't negotiate maternity leave salary. If your company offers maternity leave (not all do), then they will pay you the current rate allowed under your company's disability policy. Check with your Human Resources department.

And honey, if you were really a secretary, you would know how to spell PAID.

In the US you will have exhaust any unpaid leave (vacation and sick days) you may have accrued. After that is finished, you will need to use the FMLA to remain off of work. With the Family Medical Leave Act, your employer does not have to pay you, but it ensures that you will be able to return to your job with same rate of pay, seniority, and to the same job --or a very similar job. You will also need to continue to pay your portion of your insurance if your employer helps pay for that even though you it sounds like you won't be getting any income.

Enjoy your baby!

You can't just ask for a figure. Here in Canada unemployment pays maternity leave at 55% of your wage to a maximum of $425/week.

I do not believe you have a option to ask for anything? They may give you something, maybe not. I never got paid to have my babies. My employer was nice enough to hold my job for me which I am sure put a strain on everyone else.
Bottom line is your employer did not ask you to get pregnant. I feel a employer should not pay anything. May not be what you want to hear but I am sure there are others who share my opinion.
Good luck....

Employers in the US aren't obligated to pay for maternity leave.

Unless you have sick/vacation time, your employer doesn't have to pay you at all for maternity leave. According to FMLA laws, they only have to allow you 12 weeks UNPAID leave.
