I like Classical, although I'm not sure that falls under alternative.
Although the number of goth and punk people is rapidly growing, I still think the number of people who listen to real goth (siouxsie, nick cave, cruxshadows, anders manga) and real punk (the clash, dead kennedys, bad brains) music is small.
I also adore ska music. It had it's real heyday about mid-nineties and I see the checkerboard patters becoming instyle again, but very few people are hardcore ska lovers.
I also like groups like Dead Can Dance, Tricky, and Blue Stone which can fall under anything from electronica, goth, worldmusic, rnb, and classical or bands like Bad Brains and Fishbone who tussle with rock, ska, reggae and funk.

I love Nirvana if that's considered "Alternative" and not so popular.. And Blur, I love "Song 2" not so sure if they're Alternative too... Now you hear their songs in Shampoo commercials but I still love Alternative music regardless.... You said not to mention 'glamorized by stupid "high school" personalities" so I guess I can't mention My Chemical Romance, they've gotten so popular, but I love them to death... I like a little bit of mainstream music, but definitely NOT pop music.. *barfs at the sound!* I mean, if they weren't popular they would suck, and if they were popular they wouldn't suck, (I can't get the gist of wording this..grrrr) But I think you know what I mean.
