Dreams are the action of the brain during sleep. By mixing together the thoughts and events of the day with certain biological predispositions, the brain creates dreams to make sense of daily events and to recuperate its own functions. According the Freud, dreams reflect the desires of the ego that cannot be expressed in daily social interaction. This theory is not entirely corroborated by current research but it does have some basis.

Some say yes. Elias Howe had a dream of being chased by cannibals with really weird looking spears. That's how he came up with the design for the sewing needle that is still used on sewing machines today.

Some say no. Many believe that dreams are just a mental filing system that files and organizes the days events.

I personally believe they are both.

I think some dreams may simply reflect problems and situations in our daily lives, often in an exaggerated way.

I think other dreams may be our mind or spirit's way of helping us see a solution to an otherwise unsolvable problem. I've read of scientists and inventors who discovered a breakthrough revealed cleverly in their dreams. Dreams may offer guidance.

Erotic dreams may remind us to keep in touch with our sexuality, or reveal subconscious desires. Sometimes I wish I could go just back to sleep and continue with the pleasant dreamy experience.

Dreams may urge us to overcome a fear. Some dreams seem to foretell the future. Dreams can reflect situations in our lives. I think it's helpful to keep a dream journal, with your own analysis (or best guess at interpretation) of each dream.

Often, dreams are our body's way of telling us something. For instance, the people you meet in your dreams, and the places you go, may not be necessarily subconscious filtering, but communication about what is happening in your body; for instance pregnancy, illness, sexual activity.

It hasn't been determined what they mean or where they come from exactly, but there are endless theories...

most of the time I dont think they really mean anything. Other times, if the do mean anything, its stuff you already know. I dont think of dreams as some separate entity that is trying to tell me things.

Our dreams are the way we sub-consciously sort out our daily problems while we sleep, enabling us to handle life's problems more easily.
