what is the difference?

the local pet store sells both counterfeit silver dollars and regular silver dollars. besides the looks what is the difference???

They are two different species of fish. On is a true silver dollar and one is a tetra that looks like a silver dollar but doesn't get as large.

The counterfeit silver dollar is a tetra (which is smaller), whereas a silver dollar (who are considerably bigger, 5-6" tall) is from the same family (Metynnis) as pirahnas.

One is real and one is not. That is the definition of counterfeit. Probably the look is all that is different.
