It stands for "Portable Document File". It is a read-only document format devloped by the good people at Adobe Corp. to be a universal document format for the Internet. The idea is that every computer in the world should be able to read PDFs, whether they be Mac(who stink), Windows(who stink), Linux(who totally rocks), or anything else (who are better than Mac or Windows but probably still inferior to Linux).

It stands for portable document format.
One of the features of a PDF file is that it is similar to the layouts that a newpaper or book editor would use. Acrobat (the program used to make PDF files) excels at combining text and illustrations to make a more book-like feel to the documents.

"Portable Document Format" can generally only be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader, and generally does not allow for editing unless permission to certain fields is given. Basically it is like a word document that is locked for editing.
