She didn't fall off of or down anything; just decided to let go and walk like she's been doing for weeks, and this time gravity got the best of her.

She keeps sucking her lip and breaking it back open so that it bleeds again, then she gets understandably upset and cries inconsolably. I've got her asleep now; any advice on how to prevent her sucking and opening it up again when she wakes?

try a little ambisol...it will numb it, and leave an after taste...I find they do not like it. You could just see how she is after the nap, maybe having an hour with out sucking on it will start the healing...my daughter sucked her fat lip and she is 20 months old...it healed...we just needed to wait for the long sleep at night for her to leave it alone. (no meds given)

You can't really - she's too young to understand at this point. Not to worry though, lip and mouth cuts tend to heal really well in young kids - she'll have enough healing time when she's sleeping and the wound shouldn't continue to break open anymore.

She may possibly be reacting in an unspoken, natural way of healing her lip. But, if you feel this is not the case, perhaps you can give her something such as Otter Pops (slim, frozen, juice popsicles) to suck on.
Good luck.
