"C" stands for common time, ie. 4/4. If it's a chord, all the notes will be vertically in line, indicating that they're to be played at the same time.

umm my bro plays guitar and usually the chords are above it...Ive played piano fer 7 years now...ohh and you can play the C chord just by playing the E and the G above it... there are many variations though umm Is the C in the Beginning next to THe 4/4??? the 4/4 is the time signature.. meaning that there are 4 beats in a measure an each beat equals a quarter note..which is on the music u will see a solid black note with a stem. That is a quarter note.. ohh and the C means the same as the 4/4. umm if u find all of this interesting then u might wanna get a piano teacher or talk to somone in person...its alot easier than tryin ta type it...lol http://pianoeducation.org/ http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano/ Ohh and go to this site for chords its Very neat ya...

When you're instructed to play chords, like C Major, it will either show up as a cluster of notes, Cmajor will have G-E-C on top of each other so you play them all at once.

The only other method I can think of that will instruct you to play that chord without music is that completely above the staff will be a line of letters which are like chord progressions. It'll look just like a random "C" or something above the staff.

the big "C" on the treble clef is a time signature, it means the same as 4/4.

you will see a C chord written two ways - first, just written out as notes c-e-g, and second as a large letter C written over the staff. the first is more common, especially for beginners. the second is usually done for choral music where you are playing accompaniment.
