To get your computer back to looking like new, do "a system recovery"
These instructions, will clean everything off of your hard drive, so you must back up anything that you want to save. I have done this three times, and I got these instructions, from a computer tech. When starting your computer, tap the F-10 key. click on next-yes-and follow the instructions, that come up on your screen. When you are finished, your computer, will look just like it did, when you first bought it.Do these steps, in order, when finished.
1. set up windows firewall, in control panel
2. windows update (click express)
3. install your anti-virus program (update)
4. install anti-spyware (update)

Not only do they not want your old stuff on it, but most likely you don't want your personal information to run on there. When you bought your computer it most likely came with a set of recovery disks, or has an option when it boots to go to some sort of recovery console. If you boot with the CD in the drive or to the recovery partition you can restore the factory image of your computer, meaning it will be like the day you bought it. If you have any discs from when you bought your computer you should post what they are and you can receive further help from there.

Reformat it and re-install the operating system. You should always do this when selling a PC, or the hard drive for that matter because it may contain personal information on it. Even if you deleted the files, there are ways of recovering personal information, except if you reformat, then you can be guaranteed that they won't get anything.

Reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows.
Using the CD that it came with, do a "destructive recovery". This will wipe away absolutely everything, and then reinstall just Windows.

Reload the entire lot of apps and OS gear you had when you got it. That way it should work as day 1.
If you have any "sensitive" data, run KILLDISK before do a full reformat and reload.

If you have a system restore disk, i'd use that. It will restore your hard drive to factory condition.
However, if you have some really sensitve data on the hard drive, then you should do some deep reformatting on it first.
