The manufacturers do recommend specific types of coolant for their vehicles..generally it is the "green" or the "orange" ...either can be used in any vehicle the problem is they are not compatible with each other and CANNOT be mixed...The green is cheaper but the "orange" dexcool has a longer lifespan.

Yes there is a difference in the type of coolant to be used or right kind of coolant. GM came out with the orange kind called dex-cool for a couple of reasons one being that the life span of it before changes and that becuase of the large amount of all aluminum based engines that have been made in the past years. they found out that the dex-cool "phosphate free" kind was very effective at preventing the aluminum from corroding inside the system while the green kind "phosphate additive" didnt do very well at keeping that corrosin from acouring.

Yes, some, if not most newer cars have a new breed of coolant. It appears red to orange in color. Make sure you check you owners manual if the type you need isn't clearly marked on the cap of you coolant resevoir under the hood.

Absolutely. Ford products alone have 3 different coolants. And I've heard that a lot of the imports have their own coolants.

GM recommend if the vehicle is a "DEXCOOL" type coolant vehicle, you have to use only "DEXCOOL" coolant in it as it supposedly will wreck the engine if you don't. GM has not proved this yet as test done with normal coolant has not caused negative effects on these systems.

Yes there is, some take green and some take yellow and they don't mix. I think the blue stuff will mix with both but I'm not 100% sure so best to check your owners manual to know what you need.
