If you mean the United States, slavery began in early August of 1619 when a ship carrying slaves from Africa docked in Jamestown, Virginia. Prior to that date there were no slaves held by Europeans in what is now the USA, although many Indian tribes enslaved captives from rival tribes. Economic conditions in the southern colonies encouraged the use of slaves. The practice spread to the north, particularly New York and Connecticut. It was less in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, two colonies established for religious reasons, and which for just such reasons opposed slavery. New York abolished slavery in 1827.

I don't know the exact date but many people say around the late 1600's although I tend to think it's more around the early 1700s. I know that it was Bartoleme de las Casas who first suggested the use of African slaves after the Native American slaves were dying off, and that was around the late 1500s in and around Spain. Try the sites I've listed below.

Um no, all the answers are wrong. Try 1500's folks... and it began with white skinned folks. Yep, sorry to burst your bubbles but white people have been slaves longer than black skinned. Pulling people from Africa came much later, probably 1600's but before that, Europeans were slaves. Check out Irish history and places like that........

The Main reason that Slavery Began in the Americas began was because of sugar plantations in the Caribbean. (Not related i Know) but when the Cotton farmers in the southwest thought of that idea they asked the slave traders in New York to get them some slaves. (The reason They were in New York was because of the Molasses trade.) and then They got them and the rest is History.

The first slaves were brought to Jamestown, VA in 1619. There they were bought and sold. Historically, that's were the first slave "sales" took place. And I guess it spread throughout the American colonies (13) from there. But, don't take my word for it.
