The lunar calendar has a sixty year cycle. In the Chinese horoscope, there are 5 elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. These are combined with the twelve animal signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Lamb, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig to form the sixty year cycle. Your Chinese horoscope is based on which lunar year in this sixty year cycle you were born.

The chinese believe that each year is represented by an animal. For example, this year 2007, is the year of the pig. The order goes like this: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. this order repeats every 12 years.
The story behind this order goes something like this: The Buddha invited all the animals to his kingdom but only twelve managed to turn up. The rat was the first, then the Ox and so on....finally, the pig. To honour these animals, the Buddha decided to name the year according to the order of their arrival.
I strongly believe that you alone, make your own future. Not by watching the stars. I'm the year of the Rooster and although it was foretold that i wouldn't do so well last year, it went just fine!!

Chinese astrology (as it is known today) is the divination of the future from the Chinese calendar, particularly its 12-year cycle of animals, referred to as the Chinese Zodiac. This fortune-telling system is derived from the principle characteristics of the system: the Zodiac, the five elements of Chinese thought, calendrical cycles based on astronomy, and ancient Chinese religion.
The Chinese Zodiac refers to a pure calendrical cycle: there are no equivalent constellations like those of the occidental zodiac. In imperial times there were astrologers who watched the sky for heavenly omens that would predict the future of the state, but this was a quite different practice of divination than the popular present-day methods.

chinese zodiac is set up by your birth year-certain years are split into animal groups with your horoscope depending on what you are..I'm 1975 a rabbit my kid is 2001-I think a snake and my guy 1974 is a tiger...I dont believe in horoscopes very much but the chinese zodiac seems more on the right track. I dont think the stars can tell my future-its everchanging

Chinese astrology is related to the Chinese calendar, particularly its 12-year cycle of animals (aka Chinese Zodiac), and the fortune-telling aspects according to movement of heavenly bodies across the Chinese constellations in the sky.

The Chinese horoscope is according to the year you are born. Even though for me it is hard to classify all generation in one sign...there are few things true.
For example my generation is monkey ...lol...and we are all communicative, open, ambitius, snaky a little, we like music and art a lot...and we have a lot of things in common...besides the fact that we all are monkeys...lol
