The warning tag attached to the valve seems pretty serious. We have a friend who says he'll replace it, but this seems like something that should be left to a professional according to the tag....How hard is it?

If the t&p valve fails it could result in excessive pressure in your hot water heater resulting in an explosion. Its not that difficult of a job if your friend is good @ sweating copper joints. You dont want to get the valve to hot in the process. Good luck

It's very easy to do and very hard to screw up.
You get a new one, same pressure and temp rating, with the same threads....virtually always 3/4". Shut off the heater, shut of the water supply to the heater and open the drain valve at the bottom and start draining out the water. You only have to drain it to the level of the valve. Unscrew the old discharge tube (you will reuse it) and unscrew the valve. Wrap the new valve with teflon tape or pipe dope, screw it back in good and snug. Turn on the water, check for leaks. Put the drain tube back on.
If your friend has any basic handy-person skills, no problem. This tube should never have any valve or other obstruction in it, and should extend to within 6" of the floor. This doesn't have to be copper, it can be PVC.

in case you do no longer something, $500 to $800, could desire to conceal it. till its in a good place, and the plumbing has to get replaced. then you particularly are speaking significant funds. I did the hard paintings final month on one and won $80 5.00 ensue plus an hrs pay of $60.00 i particularly robbed the guy. He had the recent water heater and all the mandatory new fittings, with in 3 feet of the old one, it replaced right into a walk out basement, I drove my truck with in 10 feet of the back door. there replaced right into a drain with in 18 inches of the old water heater. He had a pal that needed the old water heater. All I did replaced into disconnect, and reconnect. the city mentioned it had to be completed by potential of a license plumber.

It is very simple to replace the T&P valve. Simply turn off the water to the water heater and replace the valve. Remember to turn the water back on.

if the new one screws on, simple. if it needs to be soldered on, you need to have a good torch and know how to solder a good joint. for the first, you just need to be handy and get advice from the plumbing supply house or hardware store for how to do it. for the second, you need to be handy and knowledgeable, and skilled. good luck.
