Try a solution of baking soda mixed in warm water, to the point where the baking soda will no longer dissolve (saturation point). Wash the area with the solution, let it dry and vacuum. If that doesn't work, you can try sprinkling the area with dry baking soda and then vacuuming. There are also various scented carpet vacuuming powder formulas on the market, which you sprinkle onto the carpet and then vacuum. Some of those also have baking soda. Otherwise, try lemon juice mixed in water, let dry and vacuum, though it's possible this may bleach your carpet.
Sometimes it just takes time for the smell to go away. If the affected area is in a room that you can close off, another idea is simply to open a window and then close the door, just to let it air out.

Have you used a deep cleaner yet, try that and then rub lemon juice in that spot with a towel and deep clean if you want . Lemon smell is a lot better then puke.

try lemons. cut in half and rub on the carpet. let stand 10-15 minutes or until dry. repeat and vacuum when dry.

Vinegar, trust me on this one. Get a spray bottle and evenly saturate, let the vinegar sit for a few minutes, blot it up, and vacuum it when it's dry.
