My friend wants to name his daughter with a mennonite girls' name which are often older bibical names. If you know of any they would be welcomed, thanks.

Mennonites don't just use any Biblical names. There is a subset that have been accepted in the general naming pool. The more outlandish ones are more acceptable for boys that girls.

Some suggestions for girls:

Sarah and Rebecca (the names of the wives of Abraham & Issac) are far and away the most popular, followed by Rachel and Leah (the wives of Jacob).

Hannah (mother of Samuel), Suzanna (a follower of Christ), Ruth (the Moabitess who followed her mother-in-law home to Israel), Naomi, Lydia, Marta, Mary, Esther, Abigail, Eva, Dorcas, Miriam, Deborah, Pricillia and Claudia are other good ones.

A couple less common ones that show up very occassionally: Hadassah (Esther's Jewish name), and Keren (the beautiful daughter of Job).

The qualities Grace, Hope and Faith are also used as girls' names (Grace being the most common of this group).

Menonites are predominately German, so German names are good, too.

As with the general culture, Mennonites have had different trends for women's names over the years. Women in their 60's or older tend to have names like Ruth, Miriam, Anna, Elizabeth, Helen, etc. The next generation's common names include Jewel, Carolyn, Lois, Elaine, etc. Names popular among younger women now include Janel/Janelle, Alana, Jessica, Rebecca, Hannah, Rachel, Christa, etc. These new moms, on the other hand, are following the general trends for their baby girls' names, Emma, Ashley, Rose, Emily, Julia, Olivia, Sophia, etc.

I've known lots of Mennonites and some of the more used names are indeed from the Bible: Ruth, Esther, Mary, Naomi, Sarah or combinations of those names such as Esther Ruth .
