I wanted to have a natural childbirth, but by the time I got to 9 centimeters, I was in agony. I got the epidural and it took maybe ten minutes before I didn't feel pain. I didn't feel the contractions, so it was hard for me to know when to push, but the nurses and my husband kept looking at the monitor so they could tell me when. It wasn't painful to push, but I did feel pressure, sort of like a bowel movement. After my son was born, I wasn't allowed to walk for an hour and a half because I couldn't feel my legs. I also didn't have any pain after the epidural wore off. I'm definately planning on getting another one for this birth, but a lot sooner than the last time.

It is supposed to make it pain free. But it doesn't always work. I had an epidural with my labor that worked excellent, until it wore off. I was then given another dose, but it didn't work nearly as well. I supposed it helped to some degree.
On the other hand.. I have talked with ladies who have said it worked wonders for them and made their labor much easier.
Every labor is different. I plan to have another one if I decide to have more children.

for me yes it was pain free especially with my first child. with my second it was pain free until the end when they decreased the amount that i was getting so that i could feel my contractions to be able to push the baby out better so i felt some burning and discomfort but it wasn't really all that bad. it doesn't always work for everyone though. i have a friend that got an epidural and it didn't do anything at all for her and they tried to do it 3 or 4 times and it still didn't work. so i guess it just all depends. i am pregnant with my third and i am planning on having another one done because it makes it easier for me to rest and keeps me calm so that my cervix dialates better.

I had an epidural with my first one and it was a c-section and it was pain free. The Dr did say that sometimes there are pockets that it won't effect and you will feel it all in that spot. Afterward though I had a reaction that they said was common with an epidural, my face and especially my nose turned red and swollen and kept itching. It was a pain. With my second c-section I had a spinal and it was great, no problems.

I've had 2 epidurals and they both worked very well. But my sister's didn't. She felt everything, so I guess it all depends on how it's placed. With my 2nd son I went to 10cm before they even got the medicine into mine and honestly once you get that far you might as well just go for it because all I felt was the need to push at that point, it stopped hurting really. But everyone's different, it's just a choice you gotta make.

If it is placed correctly, and doesn't wear off before labor begins, then Yes. You will still feel lots of pressure, but not any terrible pain.
