I'm a social worker and deal with gay men on a daily basis. I am really trying to understand what homosexuality stems from. I've heard people say "they're born with it," but I struggle with that. I'm a Christian and am confused about that interpretation, because I don't understand why God would create an individual to be this way when He abhors that type of behavior. I'm feeling like perhaps it's a fleshly temptation combined with some out-of-whack hormones, society's acceptance of this lifestyle, and the desire to be different. I'd really like to get some insight from other Christians as well. Let's be serious here - no silly answers, please.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, tommybear! Did I say I didn't care about my clients? Hey, I wouldn't be in this job if I didn't! The reason why I'm trying to understand is because I DO care about them.

I a bit concerned that you could get through social work education without having addressed this both on an academic and personal level as homosexuality is one of the prescribed areas that accredited social work programs must address (perhaps you are a social worker by title only and this would explain this?) You might try Turing your question on the side, If he did not "make" individuals this way why would they be? Why would anyone choose to be this ostracized, scrutinized, discriminated agained, persecuted, etc? As a Christian I would think you would believe in the divinity of all living beings and see the divinity in all people. You might understand that God's actions speak louder than the words written down and passed down by man. Might the existence of homosexuality not be the clear proof that God views homosexuality as a Devinne action just like heterosexuality?

The exact biological etiology of sexuality (which really exists on a continuum) is still largely unknown. It is a compelex phenomenon like so much of human anatomy/physiology/biology/chemostry, endrocronolgy, etc.

A few more thoughts...I think given that God seems to love diversity...just look at the richness is the varaities of ways he has made us no two people look alike, act a like, the diversity of skin and eye color, noses, ears, etc. Why would he not include the same richness of diversity in sexuality.

1 Your initial premise is wrong. The sexuality a person displays is chosen and reinforced by family and community reaction. In this way sexuality is formed. 2You forget God made you and then you chose to sin . Your Sin nature will always make the wrong choice . Leviticus 18:22 Do not lie with a man as with a woman Genesis 18:20-21 The out cry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so Great and their Sin is so Grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me If not I will know ! Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed on account of their unrepentant homosexuality. It is a sin! Genesis 19 4-5 24-25 Paul describes homosexuality as a wicked perversion of God's Gifts.Romans 1:26-27 The Wicked will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God including homosexuality. 1Corinthians 6:9-10 3God expressly forbids Homosexuality. He is Never wrong and Neither is His Holy and Inerrant Word . Why would God Produce a book in which to reveal Himself and allow it to have Flaws. He would NOT and Neither dose the Holy Bible. God dose offer Hope God forgives and Cleanses persons of this sin. Corinthians 1:6 Matthew 7:13-14 and I could continue onward. God is NOT a lyre and your dedication to Him and your love for Him and your commitment to Him will cleans you if you Truly would submit to Him and His Gift of Salvation. That is Why it is called Salvation ,it offers YOU hope in Christ Jesus . Start with repentance as described in Romans 10:9-10 and then Read of God's love for you and wha tHe gave up that you might be saved , that YOU might have Life and Life more abundantly.

Homosexuality is one of the green religions that can help us challenge overpopulation. Like being poor or in prison cuts down on waste and consumption and ploughing social workers in to fertilise fields in an ecologically friendly way can help feed the starving. Not entirely serious but interesting serving suggestions. Are you young and have you learnt about people out of books? Take some time off. Travel the world with the army. Get locked up in some foreign prisons. People get pissed off by those who know better and sip tea while folk die of homelessness. It's good to question beliefs and be open to alternatives. I don't do all my religious shopping from the same shelf.

The first thing you can do is simply separate sexuality for religion. I know it's tough but you really have to try to separate the two. Another thing you must do is separate the Bible from God. That's REALLY hard but think about it. Was the Bible really written by God or by other people...? Seriously, do you honestly think that God wants women to be stoned if she divorces her husband? Or could the Bible be an allegory of something else.

I know that separating these things are very difficult. One is taught religion as truth but I think that God wouldn't mind if you questioned something. I mean he gave us free-will...above the Angels. Right?

Ok, you separated God from the Bible and sexuality from God. What do you have left..? Humans, and what are Humans? Animals really. I mean we are, it's just we are given that free-will and intelligence to make choices and that is what homosexuality is about...being free to make choices. Humans spend alot of time trying to control these urges which in essence is natural. Yup, wanting, loving and doing sex is natural human nature and isn't bad. I think we get stuck on the idea that sex is simply to procreate but honestly...can you actually think that is true when it feels so good?

Think about your own sexuality, I know that can be tough too. I like men with dark eyes and dark hair, I always have. I am a woman and I prefer men over women. Men turn me on by the way they smell, the way they talk..what have you. A gay man or woman is just the same but they prefer different things. A gay man also prefers a man for the same reason I prefer men or maybe different reasons but it is what they prefer.

Another aspect to look into is evolution. Seriously. I know some people have a hard time with it but one must face facts that it has happened. Alot of research in sexuality has stated that our genes tell us what to be attracted to. Like me, I by nature am fair haired and eyed. Well, I prefer men with dark hair and dark eyes or another person prefers red hair and green eyes. It could be our genes telling us to mate and couple with people with genes that compliment our own. Perhaps that the gay person might have genes that tell them to go for someone of the same sex. Who knows why but the bottom line is; is that it's their choice or nature and they can't change it.

All in all though, I am so glad that people like you are asking these questions. It is wonderful to open up a conversation about this. One last thought...Can you honestly think that a person wants to be gay? It's not easy to be gay with all the stereotypes and troubles they receive. They are called names, sinners and get beat up for just liking the same sex.

I hope this helps and I hope that you can open your mind to new ideas. God gave us free-will and I am glad you are using it.
