"they were more than meets the eye" : I heard it on a movie and I don't understand the meaning. thx

It means that what you see on the surface is not all that is present. For example there maybe a beautiful starlett or actor that seems to have everything that a person could possibly want in another human being only to discover later that they are liars, cheats, drug and or alcohol addicts. Look deeper into to something than how it is directly presented.

Some form of that line has been used in lots of movies. Basically they had skills/knowledge that wasn't apparent by looking at them, causing people to misjudge their abilities or underestimate them.

It means that you can't judge a book by its' cover. In life things are what they are but until you get to know someone you are only seeing them. Take time to get to know who is around you.
