I have a Packard Bell laptop, EasyNote L4, bought last Feb. It has been the biggest waste of money ever! It has completely crashed several times and after its latest crash the sound card and all the USB ports are not working. Tried looking for stuff on their website, but nothing helpful. Even downloaded a BIOS update - to no avail.
Do I take it back to Currys and ask them to fix it?

You will not get in trouble with Microsoft, they go after the distributors when that happens. You had no way of knowing it was pirated software. In fact, I have never heard of Microsoft going after home users for anything.
Packard bell has made lousy couputers since the early 1990's and I see no reason for them to change now. Take it back to Curry's point out they sold you counterfiet goods, and demand a full refund or else. The or else is notifying authorities of copyright violations.

First of all forget, System Restore. Second, if the computer has a pre-installed Operating System then do the following. Reboot the computer and as it is rebooting look at the top Right of the screen where you will see a key which may be, F11, F10, F12 or something else. Noprmally it is F10 or F11. Take note of the key and as the computer is rebooting Press the key and follow the onscreen instructions. If this does not work then reboot and Press the key and CTRL together. If that does not work then Press the key and ALT together and in all cases follow the onscreen instructions but, do not tick the box to register.Instead tick the box to register later.

normaly there should be a partition which has all the packard bell sofware and drivers in it, if you have a windows disk, try reinstalling, format the whole hard drive including the packard bel partition, you can create your own partition, if necessary. you can alwaysdownload the drivers you need afterwards. if you cant find the drivers on the packard bell site try there support pages

Interesting. You bought it from Currys with an illegal software copy on it? It'd be fascinating to see what they say to that!
Apart from that, I'm afraid they're poor machines. I wouldn't bother with handing it back to them for repair, you may never see it again (personal experience) during your lifetime.
Add: unless it's still under warranty of course!

It will have a one year warranty, so take it back.
(However, if you've done any "home maintenance" you may have invalidated the warranty).
