Here's where things get complicated. People are telling you contradicting things too, which doesn't help. :)

USB is 12Mbps
USB2 is 480Mbps
Ethernet can be anything up to 1000Mbps, but usually 100Mbps max.

If you've got an internet connection that can even APPROACH the limits of 100Mbps ethernet, do you have a spare room? I don't eat much or make much noise. ;)

the fastest home connection you can get in the UK just now is 24Mbps.

now, when we're talking about download speed, you SHOULD get the same download speed via and ethernet adsl modem (or router) as you do from a usb modem.

The time when you'll notice a speed difference between usb and ethernet is ping time. If you're an online gamer you'll be wanting to use ethernet if possible. I think it's due to the quality of the hardware rather than the actual usb/ethernet interface, but you should notice better pings with ethernet than usb.

Having said all that, a lot of people report better speeds with ethernet modems or routers than with the standard speedtouch usb modems that isps tend to give you for free, purely because these modems are cheap and nasty. they'll get you up and running, and they'll work ok, but ethernet modems/routers tend to be more stable, and they're often able to sync at higher speeds than usb modems, due to the sensitivity of the hardware.

This again is a quality issue, and not able to be put down to usb/ethernet as such.

Ethernet is more widely used and doesn't require any drivers to use the modem.

USB 1.1 runs at 12Mbps USB 2 runs at 480Mbps and your modem would likely be running at 12Mbps unless it supports USB 2 so Ethernet is faster at 100Mbps which if you run a network and share files 12Mbps over USB will take extremely slow however over Ethernet your getting 100Mbps

So basically your better off with Ethernet over USB

the answer is no and yes

reason why is because a network cable (ethernet) runs at 100Mbit/s. Most modems run a USB 1.1 interface which USB 1.1 rust at 12Mbit/s. If you have a modem that uses a USB 2.0 interface than the USB would be much faster as USB 2.0 runs at 480Mbit/s.

Yes, in theory anyway. USB 2.0 runs at 400 - 480 Mbps. Ethernet runs at 100 Mbps.

However, your throughput will be limited to your broadband connection speed. Unless your broadband connection is faster than about 50 Mbps (extremely unlikely with any type of DSL and impossible with ADSL) you won't notice any difference.

No.
An ethernet connection is much...much ...faster than USB.

yes, but it won't make your internet any faster.

usb goes at about 480mb/sec and network cable typically goes at about 100mb/s.

whereas your internet (at fasteest) will go about 16 mb/s. so it doesn't really make any difference

No, you can't plug in both at the same time. It may just spoil the computer. I don't have any advice sorry.
