Backups are necessary in any large IT environment. Besides disaster recovery, programmers often make irreversible changes to their own half-finished code. They will make a request to the operations department to restore particular files from either yesterday or some time before that.
Tape is used because it is the only low-cost removeable storage has the capacity to store very large amounts of data. Once the backup tapes have been made, they are usually shipped to another building for storage, in case the primary operations centre is destroyed in a fire or other disaster.

Actually magnetic tape media will last a long time, and if you have hundreds of Gig to back up, it's the only convenient way.
DVDs are the way to go for most personal computer info.

Because you are worried about your disk drive breaking or your computer being stolen.
Because you are worried that losing the data on your computer would cause you very big problems.
There was a statistic that 20% of companies that lost their main computer systems went out of business within 12 months of the disaster.
Anyway, for tape you can read cd-r or dvd-r or USB disk drive or any other thing you can take out of your computer.
