hi when starting up the car theres a whistling sound, which gets louder with more revs. i change gear and the nosie level drops untill i change again. when on motorways etc it can't be heard. can anyone help please cheers

Mate its the bearings on your water pump. the exact same thing has just happened to me on my astra and when you can hear the whistling, then that means the pump its on its way out. if you ignore it and it does go then it take's the timing belt out with it and thats big trouble with a bill of around £1500 at least for a top engine rebuild.
Be wise and get it replaced.

Probably a dry wheel or water pump whistle. Try spraying wd40 down there when the engines running and see if it stops

Get your head gasket checked MK4 Astras are notorious for blowing them - mine blew so hard the car caught fire!
