I take it you are referring to the Indian Ocean Christmas Island and not the Pacific Ocean Christmas Island.
You can now fly there directly from Singapore. Previously you had to fly to Bali and catch the once-a-week plane to Christmas Island. The airport is small and the runway short, so it cannot take large aircraft.
The red crab migration is a "must-see". The island was administered by Singapore but is now Australian territory.
Further to Melvin C's post, going to CI via Australia was the only way previously. You flew to Perth (by-passing CI), spent the night in Perth, then flew by small plane to CI (retracing part of your earlier flight). The S'pore/Perth/CI route is 3 to 4 times longer than the S'pore/CI route. Christmas Island is west of Java.

Christmas island may belong to Singapore in the pass, but it is never anywhere near to Singapore.
It is in Indian Ocean, and would probably be taken away by any stonge nations in the 60's, if it was not sold to Australia in the 50's.
Better to get a flight from Australia now. More flight than in Singapore

The piers that are more likely to travel to Christmas Island will be either Marina South Pier, Clifford Pier or HarbourFront Ferry Terminal. Because both of these piers operate to our neighbour islands like Kusu Island, Sister's Island & St. John's Island etc. But I'm unsure if Clifford Pier is still in operation. You may wish to check it out online.
Kindly http://www.visitsingapore.com/publish/stbportal/en/home/what_to_see/isles_of_singapore.html , http://www.yellowpages.com.sg , http://www.eguide.com.sg for more details on the piers.
Also visit http://www.streetdirectory.com for road directions, maps and transportation uses in Singapore. This is to help you get to the right destination which I've mentioned above.
