The crest of a wave forms when the hump wave form encounters the bottom as it approaches shore. The crest forms and then falls over as the rolling action in the water can not continue. The surge of water from the falling goes up the beach and flows back down, undercutting and reducing the next approaching waves. The flow continues as an undercurrent near the ground under the water.
