how does someone get paid to moderate a forum? I mean, is there a website that connects would-be moderators with website owners?

usually the forum advertises the job on itself. You become a member of a forum, and you'll find out about the job in their "jobs" section or in their news section. (I applied to a few such positions, but didn't get the job).

Sometimes they'll advertise on sites like monster, dice, or something more related to the forum's topic. The key is to find out what you're interested in first.

it's automatic. there are no moderators, iy just depends who reports you. so yes, they are quite often stupid, immature, control freaks. But then again that pretty much describes most of the questions as well.

bwahahahaha!

yeah, right. Moderating is either an act of selfless love or control-freak nazism, there is no pay.
