Even when we didn't want/expect them in the first place?

Because we grow accustomed to them, we start to depend on them. They become a comfort even when we don't use them, it's nice to know they're there. A funny example I have is from the other day when I was going through my DVD's and I saw so many movies that have always been my favorites yet I rarely watch them. It's kind of like a security blanket to keep those around, a 'just in case' sort of feeling, if you will.

The same can be said, of course, for more important things than that, and for people...those things(and people) that come to us unexpectedly seem to be the things we treasure the most simply because we weren't looking for them. At least, that has been my experience.

In the case of something not wanted in the first place, I can only say that maybe, when we get something amazing that we didn't want, it may in fact be something we needed, whether we know it or not.

Some people feel the need to "build up treasures" for themselves here on earth. They are of the mindset whoever dies with the most "toys" wins. But you can't take it with you. Death doesn't care how rich you are. All that means is a fancier coffin. Death is the great equalizer. What we should be doing is storing up treasures in heaven. By following God's word and being a good Christian which includes loving your neighbor as yourself. I'd much rather be "rich" in friends and poor then rich with nothing but my wealth for company.

Priceless question!!
We all need to remember that all the things in this world are taken away at the time of death, our possessions, house, money, degrees, titles and even lthe loved ones.

All the things of this world are with us for these 60...70...or 80 years.....our life span!
So the Vedic philosophy is why lament for something which we already know in advance ....will be taken away....one fine day!!!

Does it make sense? I have tried to put the whole lot of philosophy in these few lines. It takes volumes to explain it with examples!!

we are afraid to lose things we love because in having them we feel that they define us, if we lose them we feel as tho we lose a bit of ourselves at the same time, I lost a nephew about 9 months ago and I feel as tho I have lost a little of myself in his passing.

I mean my nephews my kids, my nieces, all my loved ones, they define who I am because I live for them, if I lost them I would feel lost.

material possessions also define who we are to ourselves, some people collect lots of expensive things because they feel that it makes them more worthy and losing them makes them feel that they have lost some of their worth. People who have little material possession often feel that they are rich enough in love or too busy to want nice things, those types of people fear losing their identity thru there place in society, work/ social commitments.

In the end I think it really does just come down to the fear of losing our identities in losing those things we love the most. And with the things we never wanted and are still afraid to lose them, we'd nver have anything to complain about would we? Or if it's something we didn't want that someone has given us we fear losing it in case it upsets the person that gave it to us. Self-definition, Self-preservation

Because we get emotionally attached to them... or at least to most of them.... No one want to lose what they like or even love...

Other people simply fear change... and losing what they have would radically change "their world"...

I personally would hate to lose my love ones, people that I love like my family, close friends, etc...

Material thing are replaceable, but every person is unique.. and losing something that is unique is losing it forever... That I fear...

One, because we worked hard to get them. Two, sentimental value, a lot of objects hold memories, three - they are a part of ourselves, our lives, and if we lose that, we are losing a part of ourselves (that sounds too dramatic, even for me).

because we love the things we have and everyone is afraid of losing the things they love...

if everyone's so scared of losing and loving then shouldnt we just stay away from everything?

There is always a fear of losing what is dear to us. It is human nature. When we like some thing the fear of loosing it grips us.
